Defined Aptitude Accessibility Features

Defined Aptitude has a built-in accessibility tool that students can access along the toolbar on the right side of the assessment. The tools provided are "Color scheme," "Font size," and "Zoom." Some items also provide a built-in calculator as well.

Understanding Assessment Accommodations

Since Defined Aptitude is measuring students' natural abilities and aptitudes, there are some accommodations we unfortunately can't provide, as doing so would compromise the validity of the assessment results. For example, if students have the reading passages read aloud to them, we would no longer be able to determine whether they're demonstrating reading comprehension ability or listening comprehension ability - and these are distinctly different aptitudes.

Providing certain accommodations could lead us to recommend careers for students based on abilities they don't actually have, which wouldn't serve them well in their future career planning. We want to ensure that the career recommendations students receive are based on their genuine strengths and natural abilities.

Alternative for Students with IEPs or 504 Plans

If reading aloud or other significant accommodations are standard requirements in a student's IEP or 504 plan, we recommend having them take the Career Matching Assessment within Defined Careers instead. This alternative assessment can provide valuable career exploration insights and includes a self-reported abilities section, making it more appropriate for students who require accommodations that would affect aptitude measurement validity.

Supporting All Students

  • Remind students that this isn't a test they can "fail" - it's designed to identify their strengths, and it's okay if some sections are challenging
  • Encourage them to try their best on the parts they can do
  • Let students know that different students will find different sections easier or harder based on their natural strengths
